Dayton Speaker Wire Questions

Dayton Speaker Wire
How do I wire speakers?

I am interested in making a wall mounted speaker unit. The speakers that I was interested to buy are 2 Goldwood GM-85/8 5″ Heavy Duty Sealed Back Midrange 8 Ohm, 2 Dayton DC160S-4 6-1/2″ Classic Shielded Woofer 4 Ohm, and 2 Dayton DCS205-4 8″ Classic Subwoofer 4 Ohm. I would like to be able to connect my existing radio into these speakers. How would i go ahead wiring all of these speakers together? Also what wire would i use?

I would like the unit to look like the one pictured at this link: http://www.hometone.org/entry/equalizer-speaker-set-the-equalizer-with-your-hands/

If i need to have some type of receiver or amplifier that is fine. But what would be the easiest way to wire these speakers?

That’s an interesting looking device. Acoustically it makes no sense whatsoever however.

You can’t just wire these speakers up, you have to have a crossover to divide the different frequency bands. This requires first taking measurement data of each individual driver both SPL output and impedance. Once that’s done you can use that data in a crossover development software package like LspCAD to design your crossover. To make it work as this so called “Equalizer Speaker” or what ever it’s called you would need some kind of mechanism to change the gain on each driver as you move it up and down. You would also need some kind of mechanical track for each driver to slide on. It would not be trivial task. Also, a bunch of drivers all lined up sideways like that are going to comb filter all over the place with any normal crossover. You need a digital linear phase crossover and you need to pair the drivers in an “MTM” configuration to make that work. In that case you can make a very nice constant directivity speaker system with a single controllable beam and no comb filtering.

If you really want a speaker like that just for the cosmetics then you’re best bet is to just buy it. If you would rather go more for quality sound then you should use the Dayton drivers to build a more conventional design.
