Know anything about turntables?
I am planning on buying my friend a turn table for Christmas but I’m having a hard time with it because I don’t know what to look for. My budget is around $200 and I want to get one that like DJ’s use where you can scratch vinyls and mix music just like on DJ Hero.
All of the turntables that I have looked at I’m not sure if it scratches or not, they just look like regular record players…..please provide helpful links and what type of stuff I should be looking for, thanks!
Scratching can be done on any turntable and record HOWEVER (please read this):
1. Scratching will damage both the stylus (the needle at the end of the turntable’s arm that actually reads the record) and the record itself.
2. The cheaper turntables used for scratching (i.e. those plastic ones sold at Sears, Walmart, and toy stores) are junk: cheap, flimsy plastic that will wear out records quickly anyway. Even if you didn’t use these turntables for scratching, they’re still cheap, poorly made junk that is not worth the money and will wear out your records. For the more expensive ones, using them for scratching is a complete and utter waste of what was (before scratching) a good turntable. If you use them to only play records, that’s fine, but keep in mind a) these can be expensive, and prices for good new turntables usually start at about $300 and up. Also keep in mind that they can only play songs released on records–which rules out almost all recent songs.
3. Instead of getting an actual turntable, look into software that can simulate scratching. In addition to a lower price and no risk of damaging the records, you could use any music you wanted on it. If you bought a real turntable, you’d be limited to only the songs that are actually available on records–so if you want to scratch with modern pop music, you wouldn’t be able to do it on a real turntable anyway. So, instead of buying your friend a turntable for christmas, burn a CD with DJ scratching simulation software and give her the CD for christmas.
I’ll add more detail to this later, right now I’m going to go eat turkey for Thanksgiving!
