is there a way i can play my rca connection from two channel audio into surround sound?
I’ve bought a panasonic cinema system and I have a numark mixer with a dj io interface. at the moment when i plug into the cinema system i’m recieving the standard stereo output but i’ve bought a analogue to digital converter so i can use an optical cable. I’m waiting for it to arrive but i’m still wondering if this will let me achieve 5.1 surround to my audio or will i be left with 2.1 as i am now??
The amp can only work with the information contained in the signal you feed in to it.
If the source is analog stereo, then the output will be stereo regardless of it going in to a digital or analog input.
If the A to D you have ordered has five inputs (for surround plus centre channels), it will be designed to produce a digital surround signal – but then you have to feed the appropriate audio to each input to get what you want out of the corresponding speaker.
The only chance you have of any kind of surround when feeding the amp a stereo signal is if the source material was encoded in Dolby Pro Logic surround – this is the analog surround format used before digital audio links became popular, and many surround amps recognise it.
Most music since around the 70s (when the Quadraphonic LPs were released) has been encoded with surround and any normal stereo CD or MP3 fed through a surround amp with Pro Logic has a fair chance of giving surround out.
If you are trying to use full 5.1 surround source it will only work if it’s directly connected to the amp or everything in line understands the audio coding in use and maintains it right through the system.
